Unless you have a fluent speaker of another language in your family, Latin is a good language to start kids on.  English, along with many other languages are based on Latin.  
Here is an article from Time magazine on why some elementary schools have started teaching Latin.

Here is a very helpful website that you can download free textbooks, as well as be involved in an online community if you wish.  They also have materials available for Greek.

For my personal study, I have used Benjamin D'Ooge's Latin for Beginners available on the textkit website to the left.  It is a good book to get started in.  I worked half-way through that one then decided to switch to the text recommended by William E. Linney and the one from which his online lectures are based.  If you are interested in Latin, I hightly recommend his program:
