Utter Nonsense: Selected Poems of Lewis Carrol and Edward Lear

We actually finished this book about a month ago, but I’m just now sitting down to write about it.  Though I have to say, we come back to this book often.  It’s one of those books we stumble upon in school and it becomes a favorite to read again and again.  The kids loved these poems!  And I really enjoyed them, too!  A caveat for the parents; there were one or two poems in this book that aren’t exactly suited for young children (though they weren’t anything very bad).  For the most part though, this book was excellent and I whole-heartedly recommend it for some fun poems to read.

Personal favorites:

Jordan loves Jaberwocky  by Lewis Carrol.

The girls all loved The Duck and the Kangaroo as well as The Owl and the Pussy Cat by Edward Lear.

I have to admit that in general I liked Lear’s poems better than Carrol’s.  My favorites were The Jumblies and The Dong with the Luminous Nose.  Those two poems sort-of go together, and you need to read them in that order!  I loved how so many of Lear’s poems connected to others, either in subject matter or verse style.  It seemed like the more poems we read, the more little connections to other poems we would find.  All in all, lots of fun!
